Our diverse team of cancer experts are fighting for you. We believe treatment goes beyond your radiation therapy. We understand that you are a whole person with real-world concerns in the fight of your life. We are here to help you win your battle against cancer. Your primary cancer treatment and support team consists of medical professionals who work together to develop a specific treatment plan for you according to your type and stage of cancer.
Radiation Oncologist: Dr. Richard Garza
Radiation oncologists are the physicians who oversee the care of our cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment. The radiation oncologist develops and prescribes each cancer patients treatment plan. They make sure that every treatment is accurately given. They monitor the progress of the patients and adjust treatement to make sure each patient gets quality care throughout their treatment. Radiation oncologists also help identify and treat any side effects of radiation therapy. The radiation oncologist works closely with the patient’s other physicians (including the surgeon and referring physician) and all members of the radiation oncology team.
The radiation physicist works directly with the radiation oncologist to develop and deliver the treatment plan for each patient. The radiation physicist oversees the work of the dosimetrist and helps ensure that complex treatments are properly tailored for each patient. The physicist is responsible for developing and directing quality control programs for equipment and procedures. They are responsible for making sure the equipment works properly. Radiation physicists take precise measurements of radiation beam characteristics and do other safety tests on a regular basis.
Dosimetrists carefully calculate the dose of radiation to make sure the tumor gets enough radiation. Dosimetrists develop a number of complex treatment plans that can best destroy the tumor while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue and structures. Dosimetrists work with the radiation oncologist and the medical physicist to choose the treatment plan that is just right for each patient.
Radiation therapists are the people who administer the daily radiation treatment under the radiation oncologist’s direct prescription and supervision. The radiation therapists maintain daily records and regularly check the treatment machines to make sure they are working properly. Once a patient completes their initial consultation and CT simulation, the radiation therapists are the people that spend the most time with the patient each day.
Our Radiation Therapists are Erick Mundine, Katherine Sawyer and Kristianne Thrower.
The CT technologist takes the high-quality 3D images of each patient’s tumor that will be used by the radiation oncologist, physicist and dosimetrist to devise the best treatment plan for radiation therapy. People who are sent by their doctors for a CT scan will receive complete instructions about how to prepare, what to wear, and what to expect as well as a thorough explanation of their procedure. The Austin Center for Radiation Oncology has been awarded accreditation by the American College of Radiology for CT imaging after a comprehensive review performed by the ACR. This certification confirms that our center meets rigorous standards for practice in CT imaging.
